To the unfamiliar, a ‘relaxing’ holiday at the snow might sound counterproductive.  It entails a lot of planning, packing and at time, patience.

But if done correctly, it really is pure bliss.

Whether you want to ski the powder, send it on the sleds or curl up with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate near a glistening frosted window, the magic of a snow holiday is something everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

And with its long list of activities, array of retail shops and huge range of slopes catering for the beginners to the more advanced, Mt Hotham is the prime snow destination in Victoria.

Nestled in the Victorian Alps of the Great Dividing Range, between Harrietville and Omeo, Mt Hotham is Australia’s highest alpine village, sitting among the mountain peaks at 1750m. It boasts 320 hectares of ski terrain and has 13 chair lifts, three terrain parks and 35km of cross-country skiing.

We’ve put together everything you need to know to inspire you to book your trip and plan it properly – from packing the right items, booking into restaurants and registering for lessons. Because nothing spoils your winter escape more than wet hands, cold toes, hungry tummies and broken bones!

Planning Your Trip Ahead

So to avoid disappointment when travelling to Mt Hotham this Winter, make sure to plan wisely and pack properly, so that the only thing you have to worry about on your arrival is which ski run will be your first.

Organise your Snow Chains and Hire Equipment

To ensure you can reach the slopes safely, please check that your vehicle can take diamond pattern wheel chains first (these are mandatory, but not all vehicles can fit wheel chains due to clearance issues).

Hire your snow equipment when you organise your chains! New equipment can be costly, so borrow or hire skiies, snowboards, boots, toboggans and even snow clothing. Make sure you have waterproof pants, jacket and gloves, and keep that neck and those ears covered with a warm scarf and beanie.
