Romantic Brilliance promises an afternoon where orchestral colour, lyricism and sheer joy take centre stage as the Gippsland Symphony Orchestra returns under the leadership of David Williams OAM.
This thoughtfully crafted program celebrates the expressive heart of the Romantic era, inviting audiences on a musical journey that moves effortlessly from elegance and introspection to exuberant celebration. The concert, hitting the West Gippsland Arts Centre Stage on Sunday, 3 May, 2:00 pm, opens with the sparkling Overture in C by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, a work rich in vitality and charm that showcases the composer’s imaginative flair. A gentle shift in mood follows with Dvořák’s Nocturne in B major, offering a moment of quiet reflection through warm harmonies and tender melodic lines.
A true highlight of the afternoon is Serge Koussevitsky’s Double Bass Concerto, performed by acclaimed soloist Steve Reeves, former Principal Double Bass of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Rarely heard and deeply expressive, the concerto transforms the orchestra’s deepest instrument into a soaring, virtuosic storyteller.
The program culminates in the radiant optimism of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, a life-affirming work overflowing with folk-inspired rhythms, vibrant colours and infectious melodies.
Together, these works form a concert that celebrates Romantic music at its most heartfelt and uplifting — an afternoon designed to inspire, delight and resonate long after the final note.
