If you want strong legs and buns of steel but can’t be bothered hitting a gym, we’ve got the perfect hike for you.
Whilst there are several beautiful bike and walking tracks throughout West Gippsland, Mount Cannibal is a contender for boasting the best country views while giving you a great cardio workout.
Having survived the wrath of the Bunyip State Bushfires five years ago, the flora and fauna reserve has experiences considerable regrowth and rejuvenation. In the years following the fires, both the Cardinia Council and the Friends of Mount Cannibal Inc have worked to maintain and repair the reserve so that it is safe for all visitors.
Located on Garfield North Road, Mount Cannibal is a steep, moderately challenging hike for those wanting to move their bodies, breathe in the fresh country air and take in 360 degrees views of the sprawling rural landscape. For those interested in learning more about the surrounding wildlife, flora and fauna, educational signage is placed throughout the trails.
The 2.2km loop is lined with large Stringy Bark trees, has more than 100 well-maintained stairs and has several small boulders and rocks for walkers to navigate. While it is suitable for people of all ages, children should also be supervised, especially near the natural viewing areas.
A toilet block, swings and picnic tables are available for use at the base of the reserve.
It is most popular over Spring and Summer weekends, but there’s sure to be someone walking the track every day of the week and at all hours. Afterall, it’s the perfect place to perch yourself before your day starts or as your day ends and watch the magnificent sunrise or sunset.
