When Kim Kardashian had a salmon sperm skin booster facial earlier this year, the demand for the treatment went through the roof. Now, the highly sought after treatment is available in most cosmetic clinics in Australia – and a Garfield clinic will be showcasing it live this week.

Registered Nurse Felicity West has been in the industry for fourteen years, working from her own clinic, Felicity West Skin Aesthetics in Fitzroy North, as well as from Southern Cosmetics in Sandringham and Ultimate Indulgence in Garfield.

On Friday 16 August, Felicity will be performing a demo of the incredibly popular salmon sperm facial at Ultimate Indulgence Fourteenth Birthday Party VIP evening.

Better known as Rejuran, the treatment and is a premium cosmeceutical brand that originated in South Korea and has been approved in Asia since 2014 and in Australia since July 2023.

Rejuran is made up of polynucleotides which are DNA fragments made from salmon DNA (yes, including salmon sperm). The product is a gel-like consistency, and it is injected under the skin. It can be used on the face and around the eyes and is also available as a scar treatment.

It is aimed at anyone who wants to increase their skin elasticity, collagen levels and skin moisture. It’s  also meant to help repair cellular damage and decrease inflammation in the skin.

‘The demand for Rejuran has been very high!’ Felicity said. ‘Apart from the celebrity endorsements, I think its popular because people are now more than ever realising the importance of skin quality. We are moving away from the frozen, over-filled look, and moving towards more natural looking treatments. Having radiant skin plays a significant role in perceived age, health, youthfulness and attractiveness.’

Depending on the quality of your skin, two to three treatments are required at four week intervals, with most clients seeing results of the treatment after two weeks.

Felicity said that she loved how providing treatments such as Rejuran can improve people’s confidence, self-esteem and mood.

‘My job is to help my clients become the most confident version of themselves by helping them to feel more beautiful. Seeing my clients gain self-confidence is the best feeling in the world,’ she said.

‘I’d like to think that we are slowly moving away from judgements about cosmetic treatments, but unfortunately, they are still out there.’

Whilst cosmetic treatments have increased in popularity over the past decade, Felicity said there were still several misconceptions. She said some people believed these treatments could result in an expressionless look; that stopping wrinkle reducing treatments could make wrinkles get worse; and that cosmetic treatments are toxic and the long-term effects are unknown.

‘The ‘frozen’ look comes from overtreating and an experienced practitioner will know how much product to use to get the desired result but still look natural.

‘If you decide to stop having treatment your wrinkles will slowly return with repeated movement of the skin, injections will not make wrinkles worse,’ Felicity said. ‘And all products that claim to have a therapeutic effect require TGA approval. These products undergo rigorous testing and need to prove without a doubt their safety, quality, and efficacy.’

‘I hope that anyone who has been thinking about having a cosmetic treatment but has been scared to take that first step will get the confidence to book in a chat. There are so many cosmetic treatments available now and we are lucky to have access to safe, high-quality treatments that can create beautiful change in the skin whilst maintaining a natural look.’

As with any treatment, Felicity advised that it’s important to choose a registered cosmetic practitioner who is skilled, experienced and who has your best interests at heart to safely achieve your cosmetic goals. It’s also important to know the risks involved.

For Rejuran, multiple injections to the treatment area will leave the skin with several small lumps (much like a mozzie bite) for about twelve hours. Other risks include bruising, swelling and allergic reactions, although these are uncommon.
