Island Whale Festival Returns to Phillip Island

An unforgettable escape awaits locals and tourists at Phillip Island this Winter.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Phillip Island’s rugged coastline, The Island Whale Festival runs from 11 to 13 July and is a celebration of the annual whale migration and the unique coastal culture of this beloved holiday destination.

As humpback and southern right whales make their epic journey along the Bass Coast towards warmer waters, Phillip Island becomes one of the best places in Victoria to spot these majestic gentle giants.

From wildlife encounters to hands-on fun and heartfelt stories of the ocean, the Island Whale Festival offers the perfect mix of wildlife, wonder and winter fun for people of all ages.

• Guided Whale Spotting: Follow the Phillip Island and Bass Coast Whale Discovery Trail and stop at top vantage points along the coast – don’t forget your binoculars!
• Whale Watching Cruises: Set sail with Wildlife Coast Cruises and go in search of whales, seals and dolphins in their natural environment.
• Festival Experience Hub: Head to the Cowes Cultural Centre for family-friendly workshops, arts and crafts, virtual reality, an immersive sound and light experience, presentations, and live music.
• Marine Science Talks: Learn about whale migration, conservation efforts and the fascinating world beneath the waves from local researchers, scientists and photographers.
• Special Guests: This year humpback whale researcher Dr Wally Franklin and indigenous whale researchers Dr Chels Marshall and Dr Jodi Edwards will deliver a range of presentations and a special Saturday evening event.
• Dolphin Research Institute: Meet local researchers to learn about the whales of Victoria and be guided in a whale-spotting experience or learn about a career in marine science at the Dolphin research Institute Hub at Woolamai Beach Surf Lifesaving Club.
• Ocean Film Festival: Dive deep into the world beneath the waves, where up-close encounters with curious marine creatures come to life on the big screen. Celebrate the ocean’s wonders through the lens of talented filmmakers, share in the excitement, passion, and mysteries of the boundless blue. Screenings Thursday 10 July, Friday 11 July and Sunday 13 July 2025 at Berninneit Theatre.
• Pop Up Art Show: View and purchase ocean inspired artwork and craft from some of Millowl’s (Phillip Islands) talented local artists.
