Through the sunlit, spacious room, participants lie on their Pilates mats stretching their left legs out straight in unison. Playful, bouncy music plays softly in the background. Several fluffy, caramel-coloured Cavoodle puppies scoot joyfully from person to person, nuzzling arms, climbing legs, licking faces and nibbling on grippy socks.
The instructor, Taylor Rose, calmly explains the next exercise over the rising and falling chorus of ooohs and giggles. As the puppies scurry around the room, doting participants can’t resist scooping them up mid-stretch for cuddles, delighted by the adorable interruptions.
This is Pawlates, a puppy pilates class that’s held regularly at the Creative Wellness Studio in Trafalgar, brought to life by Taylor, the owner of Renaissance Reformer.
Feel good fitness trend
The concept of Puppy Pilates has grown in popularity since COVID lockdowns led to a surge of pet ownership, and with it, increased awareness of the mental health benefits of being around animals. Boutique studios in major cities like London, New York and Sydney began offering puppy pilates as wellness experiences. In more recent years, the trend has exploded on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram and transformed it from a quirky, one-off event to something that is offered regularly in both urban and regional studios.
It gives you a double whammy of feel-good hormones with the endorphins flowing from exercise and an oxytocin boost from interacting with animals.
Taylor said, ‘Pawlates offers an experience where you can completely disconnect from the busy world that you live in and really be present in the moment. You can just have fun moving your body and any seriousness is replaced with the joy of interacting with adorable puppies.’
The spark behind Pawlates
Taylor was compelled to bring Puppy Pilates to Trafalgar after witnessing its impact by chance. She said, ‘One day, my sister decided to bring her rescue puppy into one of my reformer classes. Everyone was admiring him and completely in love. They were begging me to bring puppies into my pilates classes and I thought, why not?’
‘The first class, late last year was magical. We had a huge turnout of 60 people and at the end of the day, my cheeks were sore from smiling the whole time. I hadn’t planned for it to be an ongoing offering but the response was so positive, I had to continue.’
‘For most, it’s not so much about the pilates,’ Taylor said. ‘People are looking for an experience that gives them a burst of happiness. In Pawlates classes, I notice the people who are often shy and reserved really come out of their shells. Being around baby animals brings out this light-hearted, soft, playful side of people. What I love the most is the laughter from everyone throughout the class.’
Puppy wellbeing
So far, Pawlates classes have featured Cavoodles from breeder Willow Pets and Dalmatians from a private owner. Taylor said she often receives requests for specific breeds and is on the lookout for some Golden Retrievers or Bulldogs for classes in the future.
The Pawlates experience is as beneficial for the puppies as it is for the humans. It provides important socialisation in the short window between vaccination and adoption, typically around seven to eight weeks old.
Taylor explained, ‘It’s really important for them to get used to different people, environments, smells and sounds. Being with their siblings eases them into these new experiences, helping them prepare so it’s less daunting for when they leave their siblings to go to their new families.’
In the moment
Taylor has realised that in other forms of exercise, it’s easy to drift off into thoughts about personal worries. But in a room full of playful puppies, attention shifts completely to the present moment and nothing else seems to matter.
Each session finishes with time for free play and photos, giving participants the chance to soak up the joy of gentle connection, shared laughter and the kind of simple happiness that’s often forgotten in everyday life.
