There’s something magical about watching a whale glide and breach in the open seas.
And from Friday 5 July to Sunday 7 July, people were invited to share in the magic at the Island Whale Festival 2024.
As the whales arrived in the waters off Phillip Island on their annual migration, local residents and tourists were invited to celebrate the majestic creatures with a range of special events in several different locations.
The Festival Experience Hub at Berninneit in Cowes had several exciting activities – workshops, interesting talks and presentations, virtual reality, the immersive room, face painting, art and craft activities, stalls, music and more. Daily passes provided access to the Experience Hub and Theatre program.
The Woolamai Beach Life Saving Club was a great whale spotting site and was the base of Festival founder and partner, the Dolphin Research Institute and the Two Bays Whale Project teams. The Nobbies was another fantastic whale spotting stop and was also host of the Festival Pop Up Art Show on Saturday 6 July and Sunday 7 July.
Other Festival activities this year included the Ocean Film Festival, the Whales, Wine and Wisdom Science and Film event, and many other events happening across the island.
Whales could also be spotted from the Phillip Island and Bass Coast Whale Discovery Trail, featuring some of the finest lookouts in the region. Wildlife Coast Cruises whale and dolphin boat tours also navigated the island in search of whales.
