Planning a function or a special occasion? We have the answer….
Hot off her stint at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Melbourne’s Cabaret Darling Tash York is coming to West Gippsland Arts Centre with her latest award winning show Happy Hour.
With her big, drag aunty energy and enthusiasm for the odd beverage, Tash and the Red Red Wines (drag artists Vivian Fonteyn and Peppy Smears), invite you to leave your troubles at the door and enjoy a world where everyone is accepted and everything is fabulous!
Unfortunately for Tash, everything hasn’t always been fabulous.
As a young queer girl who grew up in the suburbs of Brisbane, Tash has formulated a lot of her humour and storytelling from times of past trauma or a misunderstanding of her own sense of self.
After years of pandemic woes, relatable mental health issues and failed attempts to venture from the warmth of her cat riddled couch, she is braving the public eye once again.
In her past shows (Winefulness and These Things Take Wine), Tash has often spoken about her relationship with alcohol, however Happy Hour endeavours to unpack what it really means to pursue happiness…that doesn’t just involve more wine, cats or chicken nuggets.
Happy Hour is reminiscent of the traditional cabarets of the 1920s Weimar Era where sexual freedom, political satire and escapism form the basis of the work.
A Happy Hour in the traditional sense exists as a means to drown your sorrows in the form of bingeing on cheap booze, but as Tash has discovered over the past two years this doesn’t necessarily provide any happiness.
In the last two years, Tash has performed as an AFAB (assigned Female at birth) drag queen, intersecting perfectly with her strong comedy and cabaret origins.
The show has already received much acclaim, taking out two best cabaret nominations and even the Regional Arts Victoria Market Ready award at the 2022 Melbourne Fringe.
Happy Hour boasts jaw-dropping harmonies, improvised songs, hilarious campery and even Australia’s favourite backyard game, Goon Of Fortune.
Happy Hour and will be playing at the West Gippsland Arts Centre on Friday 18 October at 7:30pm. Purchase your tickets at www.wgac.com.au
