On any given weekend in Garfield, hundreds of people are flocking to the local footy and netball at the oval. Keen hikers are climbing Mt Cannibal for 360 views of the rolling green hills. Local farmers are herding cattle, and life-long locals are strolling the streets, stopping every few metres to chat to someone they know.

And there’s a good chance that these residents and visitors have all started their day with a good brew or feed from a local café.

The town of Garfield and surrounds is home to great restaurants and country pubs, and Luna’s Café is a strong addition to the local food scene.

Owned by Kane Warenycia and David Rushton, Luna’s opened its door in November 2023, a year after the baker and the barista decided to take up shop in the building next to The Cannibal Creek Bakehouse and Café.

They Cannibal Creek Bakehouse and Café opened in 2017, situated in a building with 100-year-old roots. The bakehouse has since gained a strong reputation for its barista-made coffee and amazing artisan sourdough baked on the original iron works, which was cast in England around 1890. The brickwork for the building is estimated to have been laid about twenty years later.

When the building next door went up for lease in November 2022, Kane and David jumped at the opportunity to expand their business and create a café where they can continue to sell delicious food, while still continuing to operate the bakery next door.

‘As soon as we walked through the doors of the building, we had a vision,’ Kane said. ‘We wanted it to have greenery and timber but not make it too busy.’

Luna’s is Garfield’s answer to a Fitzroy eatery with simple, modern, Instagram-worthy dishes. And with the foodscape ever changing, there are always new specials on the board to satisfy different tastes. Kane and David  are also hoping to acquire a liquor license soon, so that they can include a restaurant-style flare at Luna’s, and potentially host events in the large, stunning venue.

They source a lot of their ingredients from surrounding businesses and residents, and they are environmentally friendly -using an energy-efficient oven and refusing to wrap their bread in plastic.

They pride themselves on making their tantalising array of sweets in-house and continuing to offer up great coffee in both Luna’s and the bakehouse.  The bakehouse also provides takeaway meals including homemade sausage rolls and pies and churns out a steady amount of bread daily for its loyal customers.

The freshly stone-milled grains in sourdough bread creates a flour that retains the germ, bran, and endosperm, offering a full spectrum of nutrients and rich flavour. It is believed to aid digestion, improve gut-health and help with blood sugar control, as well as several other health benefits.

‘We have had a lot of people with food intolerances, such as gluten-intolerant or FODMAP followers, comment about how our sourdough bread doesn’t seem to affect them,’ David said.

‘About 90 percent of our bread sales go to returning locals and ten percent are visitors,’ Kane added.

‘We have a lot of loyal customers.’

You can pick up your little slice of happiness, as well as take-away coffee, wraps, sweets , hot pies, and sausage rolls from Cannibal Creek Bakehouse. Or sit down for brunch, lunch or a snack at Luna’s. Bookings are recommended!
